It replaces Sight Savers International, for which the optical chain raised more than £200,000 during a two-year period.
Specsavers aims to raise more than £100,000 to help train 20 puppies, 'one for every year that it's been in business'.
Co-founder Mary Perkins said the charity's work for blind and partially sighted people made it an 'ideal' choice. 'We wanted to work with a UK sight-related charity that had a direct interface with the communities in which we serve. The work the Guide Dogs do significantly improves the standard and quality of life for people with serious sight problems, giving them independence and confidence and allowing them to lead as normal a life as possible. Initially, it is our aim to raise enough money to pay for 20 new puppies, but we may well go on to sponsor further dogs if the initiative is the success we expect it to be.'
