Eyewear company Italia Independent has introduced a colour-changing sunglass - the I-Thermic - that reacts when exposed to a temperature higher than 30°C.

The company pointed out that the process that provides the deposition involved an enzyme with coloured pigment that, when it reaches 30°C becomes transparent and reveals the colour or texture of the base. Examples are a black frame with a Union Jack design beneath or a black model with a camouflage pattern (below). Italia Independent described the process as gradual and forever reversible. This meant that the sunglasses would look different in relation to the physical state of the wearer, with the colour changing as the temperature changes with aerobic activity, jogging and trekking, particularly at the point of contact with the skin.

Speaking about the development, Andrea Tessitore, president and CEO of Italia Independent said: 'Our mission is to reinterpret classic shapes with innovative materials. Our first sunglasses were hand-crafted with 47 layers of carbon, then we launched the velvet effect sunglasses patenting UV Lux treatment and recently we made the first totally mirrored sunglass. I-Thermic is out latest special innovation.'

There are seven camouflage colour variations, as well as some limited edition models.

The sunglasses come with graduated lenses. Italia Independent is distributed in the UK by Marma Eyewear, which has developed new technology to offer I-Thermic in prescription in its full lens range of lenses, from graduated to polarised.
