Support group targets elderly

Eye health
Campaign launched to help one million elderly people who suffer from inadequate vision services.

One million elderly people who suffer from inadequate vision services will be the focus of a two-month long campaign launched last week by the practice support group Primary Health Net (PHN).

Better Vision For the Elderly will target the family and friends of elderly people in need of eye care services through local newspapers, broadcast media and the mylocaloptician website.

PHN claims the website, www.mylocaloptician.co.uk is the highest ranked public education site in the UK. At the beginning of the year it was receiving almost 1,000 visits a day. Site manager Charles Greenwood claimed that social networking on the website would be invaluable to the initiative. The campaign seeks to help the one million elderly people who suffer sight loss that could be improved by an optician. He said practitioners could help the campaign by doing simple things like printing and displaying a poster, which is available on the site, or posting it up in libraries or GP surgeries.
