Tesco has discontinued a bespectacled children’s t-shirt collection after a mother pointed out it could lead to playground teasing.
The retailer agreed to withdraw the t-shirts after a mother complained about designs of animals wearing glasses along with the words ‘Nerd’ and ‘Geek’.
Aneliese Whittaker, whose 18-month-old son wears thick glasses after being born with dense cataracts, said in a public complaint posted on Facebook that such fashion statements gave children a negative association to glasses.
She posted: ‘Why is it OK to have a negative connotation associated to someone’s impairment?
‘Why should my son grow up with people making fun of him because it’s “fashionable”? It may only be a t-shirt to some people, but it’s the message you, as a leading supermarket, are giving to young children.'
