David Thomson (pictured)has been awarded a chair in optometry and visual science at City University.
Mr Thomson studied optometry at City then after two years in practice returned to carry out research towards a PhD in eye problems associated with viewing computer displays.
Following two years' post-doctoral experience studying pupil responses in patients with brain damage, he was appointed to the academic staff at City in 1990.
His research interests have focused on the development of computer software for vision assessment and screening. His programs Ð including Test Chart 2000, City Hess Screen Ð use new IT developments in computer and display technology to provide a range of tools for optometrists, ophthalmologists and teachers. They are used in over 1,000 locations in the UK and abroad.
Mr Thomson has lectured extensively, and was nominated for a national teaching award in 2000. He was awarded an inaugural teaching fellowship at City in 2001.
