Vision charity The Eyecare Trust has thrown its weight behind a new divers' vision campaign led by Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn.

The Eyes on the Road campaign, also backed by insurance firm Westfield Health, has warned of the dangers of driving without roadworthy vision.

Eyecare Trust chairman Dharmesh Patel said: 'Westfield Health and the Trust are delighted to have Meg on board with the Eyes on the Road campaign and we look forward to working with her in the coming months as we promote the importance of good vision when driving on business or for pleasure.'

He estimated there were nine million road-users driving with vision below the DVLA's minimum eyesight standards.

Politician Munn, already an active campaigner on road safety, has urged the government to provide more information to drivers.

She said: 'This campaign is a great way for people to find out more about vision and driving and what the proposed changes in legislation could mean for them.

'It is also essential that government takes the opportunity to do all it can to support drivers and make information readily available. I will continue to campaign on road safety issues in parliament to improve safety on our roads for drivers, pedestrians and other road users.'

New legislation on drivers' vision is due to be introduced into UK law later this year, with the Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) still consulting on minimum eyesight standards for car, motorcycle, bus and lorry drivers.

It was first announced last year that the Trust was teaming up with Westfield for a campaign that was going to be called Drive (News 02.09.11).
