Two-week train trip to bring vision care to Africa

Vision Express is funding an optical assistant's volunteering trip to Africa

An optical assistant working at Vision Express has won company sponsorship to volunteer for a two-week vision care charity scheme in South Africa.

Samantha Davidson from Glasgow will board a locomotive train in Johannesburg before stopping at rural areas including Vryburg and Delareyville.

She said: ‘I chose to pursue a career in optometry with the aim to help people and make a difference and I’ve done a lot of volunteer work and fundraising in the past.

‘It’s a first-come first-served service and the eye clinic team sees 150 patients daily at each location so quite often people arrive really early and wait a long time to be tested but we’ll be providing a same-day service for optical prescriptions.’
