International swimming champion and TV presenter Sharron Davies used the opportunity to nominate manager Michael Beaney for the QueenÕs Jubilee Baton Relay.
All cities throughout the UK are obliged to put forward a representative to take part in the event which will precede the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in July.
Ms Davies met Mr Beaney a few weeks ago when she underwent laser eye surgery. She nominated him to represent Newcastle because of his work with the youth sports community in the city. He is supporting the construction of a Centre of Excellent for the South Northumberland Cricket Club.
She said: ÔMichael and his team at Ultralase have made a big difference to my life, by giving me excellent vision, and the freedom to really enjoy a wide variety of sports. I couldnÕt think of a better way to thank him than through a nomination for such a worthy cause. I wish him the very best with his endeavours raising awareness of the Centre.Õ
u The official opening of UltralaseÕs Newcastle-based clinic took an unexpected turn when the guest of honour nominated the clinic manager for a special sporting challenge.
