Vision Council survey reveals sports sunglass trends

One third of adults plan to purchase sports sunglasses in the next year, according to a survey among 2,200 US adults released by The Vision Council ahead of National Sunglasses Day on June 27.

While only 11 percent of adults surveyed own sports sunglasses, usage is high during activities like hiking, running and biking and wearers reported being highly satisfied with their frames.

Men were three times more likely than women to own sports sunglasses, 68% own two or more pairs and about half of owners have prescription lenses.

The most favoured features of sports sunglasses were UV protection (40 percent), style (35 percent), fit (29 percent), polarized lenses (28 percent), and scratch resistance (26 percent).

Alysse Henkel, vice president of data and insights at The Vision Council, said: ‘Our findings show that sports sunglasses are not as widely adopted as traditional sunglasses, but the satisfaction rate and the types of activities sports sunglasses users participate in suggest that more individuals could benefit from having a pair in their collection.’

This year’s National Sunglasses Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wearing sunglasses to protect eyes from the sun, with a spotlight on sports sunglasses.
