Staff from the FMO, ABDO and FODO held a party for him last Friday to mark the occasion.
The FMO issued a statement to say: 'Richard joined the FMO at a time of major change and assisted with the complex task of incorporating as a company limited by guarantee. He also assisted in the relocation of the company to new premises, as well as being involved in the outsourcing of exhibitions management and refining of other management procedures.
'Now these tasks are complete, Richard plans to resume the retirement that commenced when he retired as chief executive and registrar of the GOC in 2000; but he has agreed to assist the FMO on a consultancy basis as and when the need arises.'
Mr Wilshin will also be acting as a consultant for the Joint Optical Committee for the European Union, and will help the body organise a European Council on Optometry and Optics meeting to be held next spring.
It is not know yet who will take over the role of FMO general secretary.
