A week of news - Specsavers learns its lesson

Specsavers learnt this week it might need to adopt some more defensive play when it comes to its famous 'Should've Gone to Specsavers' adverts.

Kevin Pietersen, the England cricketer, successfully claimed damages after the multiple wrongly published an advert suggesting he may have tampered with his bat in an attempt to prevent Hot Spot technology working.

Specsavers has since apologised and removed the advert, but the legal action is proof that, such is the popularity and audience for its iconic adverts, more caution is needed.

Other adverts the company aired recently included references to Ukraine's exit from Euro 2012 and another about footballer Eden Hazard.

It will therefore be interesting to see whether the KP incident signals an end to this topical approach in favour of more generic don't-use-a-hoover-to-mow-your-lawn style of gag.

Regardless, the Guernsey-based firm should certainly not lose its sense of humour because of one slip up at the crease when playing with a straighter bat would surpass.
