1.6 million UK lens wearers are still being prescribed/specified ‘reusable’ lenses

Responding to the letter in Optician from Elizabeth Ralph FBDO, entitled ‘Questions for Daysoft’:

The technical/product matters raised, such as the relationship of Dk to different lens powers, are addressed in the B2B www.daysoftECP.com website.

Regarding the law a correction is required.  The ‘specification’ should be sufficient to allow the lens to be ‘replicated’.  Contact lens ‘replication’ is achieved by supplying lenses which comply with ISO 18369, as Daysoft does.  This works.  Daysoft has data on file for over 250 million Daysoft lenses which replicate the performance of the other ISO brands listed on its drop-down.

However, 1.6 million UK lens wearers are still being prescribed/specified ‘reusable’ lenses.  Worn just once, let alone 30 times, these lenses will NOT comply with ISO standards and the ethics of marketing such lenses should be questioned.   I was therefore particularly pleased to read that Ms Ralph is a ‘great believer’ in the hygienic and convenience benefits that daily-disposables bring, mentioning that they are ‘… more hygienic than reusable lenses’.  It is for this reason Daysoft only produces and sell this modality.
