Technology has always been a feature of optics. Traditionally it has controlled the pace and sophistication of optical devices but the pace of change has quickened.

Mathematicians have long been able to describe the curves required on personalised progressive lenses but it is only relatively recently that the computer numerical controlled equipment able to generate such lenses and frames has been widely available. The power of computers and the software algorithms they run can still design much more than is practical to make.

The internet brought technology change of a different nature. Those suffering eye disease could begin to look up their conditions more readily while retailers could begin reach out direct to customers removing the eye care professional from the sale of spectacle and contact lenses altogether. The next step may well be eyecare telediagnosis to offer a healthcare foil to the online retail experience.
