It's not often that optics has the opportunity to get in on the ground floor with an exciting new market, but Norville's recent seminar on 3D eyewear provided a fantastic overview. Its partner in 3D, Polaroid, provided experts to explain the technology, its development and future direction. While the science is sure to excite techies and gadget freaks, the really exciting prospect for optics is the eyewear.
To date the thrust of the eyewear has been cheap throwaway pairs of which tens of millions have been produced and shipped in from China. But manufacturing disposable specs at such a rate is unsustainable, providing them is a logistical headache cinemas don't want, while 3D TV buyers need a quality product to go with their expensive new toy. Step forward quality 3D eyewear.
