We are so used to hearing high fallutin' stories of visual science discoveries that it is all too easy to forget the simple stuff that really impacts peoples' vision in their everyday lives.

While neurologists are fretting about the nonorganic vision loss of the all-weather sunglass wearer (News) there is an altogether more important battle raging over the humble low energy light bulb.

The mass uptake of compact fluorescent lamps has had a big impact in the homes of the elderly and those with low vision and it is optometrists and DOs who are left to suggest a solution to the shortcomings of inadequate light sources.
