Research is a wonderful thing but it's what you do with that research that really counts. Optician has reported on many findings over the years from simple surveys to multi-year studies of whole populations and on to ground-breaking discoveries in science.
This last point provides a neat segue to Dua's layer (news). This micron-thick layer within the cornea could change the way we think about eye disease and, according to the national press, require all text books to be re-written. Dr Harminder Dua said it was surprising to find the layer because it had been assumed the eye was fully understood, but its discovery could lead to safer and simpler eye surgery.
