If the General Optical Council thought it might enjoy a period of peace and quiet in the New Year after reducing fees and cutting costs at the end of last year it will be sadly disappointed.
After what could only be described as an annus horribilis for the GOC it seemed to have pulled things back together by the year end. As 2011 dawns it's no longer the profession that is throwing brickbats at the glossy Harley Street regulator's door but online retailers. The cry is PDs for all.
As Optician went to press a petition for the GOC was heading down the M6 clutched in the indignant hand of Metsuki's Ewan McFarlane (see News). McFarlane has sought the backing of senior MPs in his hope of PDs for all, debated the issue with senior GOC members on Radio 4's You and Yours and secured many column inches in the national media. He also intends to take the issue to the Office of Fair Trading. His demands come as no surprise. The PD is a potential door opener for online spectacle sales.
