Visiting optometrists can constantly be heard telling others how rewarding and fulfilling it is to care for the elderly in their own homes. It makes perfect sense. It is more convenient for the patients, arguably cheaper for the state and allows those professionals who have entered optics to deliver eye care to reach patients who would otherwise go untreated. For the individual professional it is a fulfilling and varied career choice where no two days are the same.
One of the biggest frustrations of home eye care is the low take-up of services among those who are entitled to see an optometrist at home. Tens of thousands more elderly people should be having eye examinations and being dispensed with spectacles at home.
