'Eye-devouring amoeba'

Rory Brogan

The current interest in Acanthamoeba shows little sign of waning as evidenced by another piece, sensationalist as it might be, from the Daily Mail http://tinyurl.com/9ktssbs. It is all well and good raising awareness about such a potentially dangerous infection, but scaring the wits out of all contact lens wearers maybe isn't the way to go about it. As the piece states, the number of infections is small, but they are serious and sight threatening. The lesson again is for wearers to follow advice on solutions and to keep their contact lenses away from water. What is promising, and I hope to find out more about it, is the mention of better contact lens cleaning solutions being developed in Scotland. Is seems that the latest article stems from a lecture at The Brtish Science Festival in Aberdeen and hopefully the end result will be a reuction in the cases of Acanthamoeba, not in the number of contact lens wearers.
