The latest statement from the RCOphth paediatric sub committee has the usual anti-optometry stance, but this time goes on to make veiled claims that I suspect it cannot substantiate and if it can will expose a scandal in British healthcare of the highest order. The veiled claim I allude to is that of the deliberate prescribing of spectacles to children who do not need them in the statement: 'Targeting such vulnerable groups would be a better use of resources and would also help avoiding the possibility of unnecessary prescription of low power spectacles to children with non-specific or unrelated symptoms.' This clearly gives a suggestion that such prescribing is happening now. If it is it should be stopped and I call on the RCOphth to produce this evidence and name and shame the people who are doing it. If no evidence can be produced then I would expect a very public apology as such a veiled claim can only serve to bring a profession into disrepute.
