I was pleased to read the editorial comment in last week's Optician urging people to check the content of their new NHS contract before they sign. I have been surprised at the lack of response from optometrists about this new contract. I do not want to use this column to outline my personal problems with its content, but I do want to repeat how utterly vital it is to read the content of the contract and understand what you are signing.

I commented afterwards to her that she must have wished that the GPs, pharmacists and dentists had all been so meek when they had been confronted by their new contracts. One of the most interesting moments was when the audience was asked to agree how frequently they would like to submit their reports on adverse incidents and SUIs.
