The announcement from Moorfields Eye Hospital that there has been a rise in the number of severe and rare eye infections, including Acanthamoeba keratitis, is a worrying one for contact lens practitioners, manufacturers and wearers alike.
With a campaign to heighten awareness of proper contact lens compliance among students as university starts again, Moorfields is taking the issue seriously. It is also planning to engage with practitioners to reinforce the need to explain to contact lens wearers all the steps of good lens wear, hygiene and habits.
It would seem, going by an Ask the Expert session with ophthalmologist Chris Hemmerdinger at Optrafair London earlier in the year (23.05.14), that the Moorfields example is not an isolated one as he also noted that Acanthamoeba was on the rise.
