The rub of the problem

Rory Brogan

Much is written about the dangers of some cosmetic and coloured contact lenses but here's some scientific evidence that explains just why they may be problematical. Researchers at the school of optometry in Hong Kong found that of 15 brands of the lenses from the internet, cabinet stores and optical shops, all but two had surface pigments that rubbed off when tested.

They also examined microbial adhesion to the lenses and those with micropigments attracted significantly more micro-organisms (x6) when exposed to them. Conversely, the two that passed the rub-off test showed no significant difference in microbial adhesion to their clear counterparts. The message is very clear - purchase cosmetic lenses from a reliable source and make sure they are fitted by a professional. There are very definite risks in opting for cheap subsitutes.
