Although I am not Welsh, I have been living here for many years now. The Welsh are a very proud nation of people and the Welsh language is very precious. While I cannot fluently converse in Welsh, I can speak some and both of my children grew up speaking Welsh – largely thanks to the aim that all children be bilingual by the time they finish primary school.
Although almost all Welsh speakers are bilingual, the language is quite rightly being protected and promoted. We have a dedicated Welsh Language Commissioner and legislation is in place that Welsh speakers have a right to access services in their own language. As such, road signs, letters, leaflets and the like are all produced bilingually here.
