Optomap captures 82% of the retina in a single image, increasing to 97% when images are montaged. In comparison, traditional retinal scans could previously only capture around 15% of the retina. The retina, a sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, is vulnerable to various diseases, making early detection crucial.
With an image size increased by 67%, Optomap can help Optometrists to detect early signs of serious health conditions, including ocular tumours, hypertension, and diabetes. In the UK, an estimated 6.2 million people are living with undiagnosed health conditions, with over 1.2 million adults believed to have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.
Kyle Rowe, Managing Director at Boots Opticians, said: ‘We’re delighted to bring Optomap’s ultra-wide eye scans to Boots Opticians customers. This innovative technology not only gives patients a more detailed eye exam compared to traditional eye tests, but it can give a more accurate picture of their health, detecting early signs of many serious health conditions. This is transformative in terms of empowering patients to be able to make more informed decisions about their overall health.’
Dr. Philippa Kaye, GP and author, emphasised the importance of regular eye tests, stating: ‘Regular eye tests are an important way to keep track of your well-being and stay on top of your health. Think of your eye test as part of an overall check-up, as some sight-threatening and serious health conditions often have no symptoms, so a simple eye test can be one of the best ways to spot them before it’s too late.
‘Optomap is a game-changing eye scan that can support opticians to detect signs of underlying conditions, allowing for earlier diagnosis and treatment, keeping you healthier overall.’
Optometrists’ Experience with Optomap
Colleagues at the Reading Boots Opticians store have already seen the benefits of the technology.
Resharon, an Optometrist at the store, shared: ‘I believe Optomap is a beneficial tool for Optometrists as it's non-invasive and provides a more detailed view of the retina, helping me with my clinical decisions.’
Pally, another Boots Optometrist, added: ‘The Optomap has been a great addition to the store, bringing new technology and assisting Optometrists to be at their best for customers.’
Patient Testimonials on Optomap
Patients who have undergone an Optomap scan have also highlighted its impact.
Robert, a patient whose Optomap scan led to the early detection of a large melanoma, said: ‘Following a routine eye test, my Optometrist urgently referred me to an ophthalmologist, where they conducted an Optomap scan—something I hadn’t heard of before. I didn’t have any visible symptoms, but the scan revealed a freckle, which was in fact a hidden melanoma in my eye.
‘I was worried, but thanks to early detection, I was able to receive prompt treatment from an ophthalmologist. The Optomap scan quite simply saved my life; this cutting-edge scan is a game-changer for eye health, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it.’
Another patient explained why the introduction of Optomap influenced their decision to book an appointment: ‘The addition of Optomap was the reason I booked an appointment today with Boots Opticians. My health is important to me, and as both my grandparents lost their sight, having an eye test is something I never miss.’
