Moorfields eyes new site

Moorfields Eye Hospital has revealed proposals to move its main central London hospital from City Road near Old Street to more modern facilities in the King’s Cross/Euston area.

A statement outlining the plan said the existing buildings at City Road were more than 100 years old and built ‘at a time when hospital care was provided very differently to how it is now'. The buildings were deemed ‘no longer suited to the provision of 21st-century clinical care, research or education’. Moorfields also said the configuration of existing buildings offered little scope for true integration between clinical, research and teaching elements of its work.

‘Although intermediate refurbishments go some way to improving the environment for our patients and staff, they are no substitute for purpose-built accommodation,’ the statement added.

The hospital trust has entered into an engagement process that will run until February 14, with views on the proposals sought online. It was also running a drop-in session on January 24 to answer questions.
