An award of £100,000 for research into glaucoma has been announced by the International Glaucoma Association (IGA) and The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
The two organisations will award the funding to a successful applicant researching ways to directly improve glaucoma management. Funded by the IGA, the award has been running for nearly 20 years and has previously funded research into areas such as prospective stem cell treatments and utilising big data in patient risk stratification.
Glaucoma cases are expected to rise by 22% over the next 10 years, and by 44% over the next 20.
Professor Philip Bloom, the IGA’s chair, commented: ‘The importance of research awards in the field of ophthalmology cannot be understated. Research has led to improved technology and innovative methods of service delivery that are helping to improve the way we deliver care. We’re proud to have played a role in this, and we’re excited to see what new studies will be proposed in this grants round.’
