This weekend (July 12) Optician editor Chris Bennett is competing in the Fambridge Yacht Haven Half Iron Triathlon to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. So far he has received generous donations from Essilor, Hoya, The Hakim Group, Specsavers and Leightons along with individual donations to bring his total to £690. The event will see Bennett swim 1.9km in the tidal waters of the river Crouch, cycle 90km around the Essex coast before running 18km around the lanes and trails of the Dengie peninsula. Blind Veterans UK, which is celebrating its centenary this year, provides help for those who serve, or served at any time in the past, in the armed forces. It works with optometrists to provide care to ex-services staff through its No One Alone Campaign. Bennett said: It’s been a while since I competed in a half iron distance triathlon so I am facing this weekend with a little trepidation, especially that sea swim. As its Blind Veterans UK centenary it would be great to reach the £1,000 target.’ If you would like to make a donation visit Bennett's Justgiving page.
