Optical companies are being warned to watch out for letters encouraging exhibitors to sign up for a bogus exhibitor directory for Optrafair Birmingham which takes place April 18-20 next year.

The letter, from a Mexico based company, is a scam well known to regular Optrafair exhibitors. The website www.expo-guide.com currently lists a number of UK optical companies and organisations but has no connection to Optrafair and does not appear to offer any tangible benefit to those listed on it.

Filling in the form that accompanies the letter commits the customer to an insertion on a web-based directory costing  €1,271 each year. Anyone signing the form is committing to a three year contract costing €3,813. The organiser said most exhibitors would easily spot the scam, which tends to surface most years, but signing the paperwork and sending it back could be a costly mistake.
