A tortured mind, but who is it?

There was an enigma in the entries for the Optician Awards. Among the many conventional entries was one in the Freshlook Optical Assistant of the Year category that both worried and intruiged us. As you can see from the images L. Davinci Code care of Turin Breaks they emplored us to take the following into consideration. A list of historical figures from contact lens development and optics followed. But who is this? And what are they trying to tell us?
