I'm not quite sure what to make of this piece that tells of one part-time contact lens wearer discovering that she could have saved $20 a year on solutions and a few trips to the store by not using the case supplied by her solutions company. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-earle-mcleod/be-conscious_b_1273208.html It's not a giant expose - the author was given a much smaller case by her eye care practitioner to store her lenses while having her eyes examined. I know there's a bigger message, that we should consider whether regular advice is necessary and whether we should be following it blindly eg the oil change in the car referred to in the piece. Even if the savings to be made in the CL solutions example aren't great, the piece does raise one question, that is, are deeper contact lens cases strictly necessary to keep the lenses clean, hydrated etc? The author notes that 'it sure looked to me like my lenses were doing just fine in their smaller space' in spite of 'no longer swimming in an Olympian pool of solution'. Any contact lens solutions companies out there who would like to affirm or counter this? In my experience the cases I get with multipurpose solutions couldn't by much smaller, especially taking into account my chunky fingers.
