Is everyone cycling to Paris this year?

Between August 15 and 25 the optical profession is being invited to help support the charity challenge Optoms Cycling for Sight by making a donation or getting on their bike. The initiative, started by optometry students, aims to raise £25,000 by encouraging those in the profession to cycle a distance of their choice and raise £1 per mile for Optometry Giving Sight along the way. As a finale Fares Hatoum (pictured) will attempt to ride from London to Paris in 24 hours, to make a donation for this epic feat go to www.justgiving.com/teams/oc4s. Last year’s OC4S challenge saw optometry students cycle 800 miles, making stops at each optometry department and raising more than £3,000 with support from companies including Specsavers, Eyecare 3000 and Topcon. Event coordinator, Gemma Hill, said she wanted to up the ante this year and get the whole profession involved. ’If we can raise £1 per mile we will be able to give a huge amount of money to Optometry Giving Sight. I consider the provision of eye care an often overlooked cause and I am committed to getting everyone involved to rectify this.’ Those taking part in OC4S can ride in the gym, to the shops or further afield, said Hill. To get involved email info@oc4s.co.uk or log onto www.oc4s.co.uk/sign-up/. To follow Hatoum’s progress join the Facebook group Optoms Cycling for Sight UK or @OptomsCyclingUK on Twitter.:
